RESEARCH INTERESTS. My students and I have been investigating clathrochelate complexes, species in which the metal ion is completely encapsulated in a ligand cage. We have been designing clathrochelate complexes which possess functional groups that allow these cage complexes to be bonded together or be bonded to other metal complexes. Our main area of focus recently has been the synthesis of porphyrin species with appended clathrochelates, the self-assembly of molecular squares that contain clathrochelate complexes, and the exploration of new synthetic routes to form linked clathrochelate complexes.
