Degree Requirements
A brief summary of the requirements for the chemistry major are listed below for more information look in the department handbook.
All chemistry majors are required to take the following eight core courses within the department:
- Chemistry 105 Fundamental Chemistry: Down on the Farm
- Chemistry 107 Chemical Structure & Bonding
- (NOTE: Chem 105 or Chem 107 may be taken as a first course in Chemistry)
- Chemistry 108 Chemical Reactivity
- Chemistry 203, 204 Organic Chemistry
- Chemistry 221 Chemical Applications of Spectroscopy
- Chemistry 305, 306 Physical Chemistry
- Chemistry 317 Instrumental Analysis
In addition, the following courses should be completed before enrolling in Chemistry 305:
- Physics 111 Mechanics and Heat
- Physics 112 Waves and Electricity and Magnesism
- Mathematics 111, 112 Calculus of a Single Variable
- Mathematics 211 Multivariable Calculus
The department offers the degrees of bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, and the interdisciplinary BS in biochemistry/molecular biology. The following courses may be taken depending on the interests and degree goals of the individual student:
- Chemistry 216 Introduction to Forensic Science
- Chemistry 333, 334 Biochemistry
- Chemistry 353 Advanced Organic Chemistry
- Chemistry 375 Advanced Inorganic Chemistry
- Chemistry 460 Individualized Study Research� (Chemistry 465 Summer Research Internship)
A minor in chemistry consists of six courses, one of which must at the 300 level. Independent Study/Research may not count as one of the six courses.
