Undergraduate Research

Students are invited to develop collaborative projects within a professors' own areas of research. Such projects often result in publications in scholarly journals or presentations at scientific meetings. Students receive academic credit for such research and during the summer receive a summer stipend from either the endowed Albaugh Fund for summer research or external research grants. These student research projects culminate in an oral presentation and a written thesis. In past summers as many as fourteen students have stayed on campus and worked on summer research projects in the Chemistry Department. (Group photos )

Faculty members' research specialties include:

Synthesis and characterization of functionalized clathrochelate complexes
Secondary metabolic pathways and biologically active metabolites
Synthesis of organic ligands and their incorporation into self-assembled molecular squares
Resonance Raman spectroscopy of small free radicals

Research students are encouraged to present their results at local and national scientific meetings. Gettysburg takes part in an annual regional meeting of the Intercollegiate Student Chemists, in which students report on their undergraduate research. Participants gain a valuable introduction to scientific meetings and a chance to exchange ideas with students from other institutions.
