She then attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, earning both a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Saxophone Performance, where she studied saxophone with Dr. Steven Stusek and jazz with Chad Eby. Dr. Heim also earned a post-master’s certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy, and her dissertation explores the role of post-tonal analysis in the performance of new music for saxophone quartet.
As baritone saxophonist in the Minerva Saxophone Quartet, Dr. Heim was a winner of MTNA state and regional competitions, as well as a finalist at the national level. Minerva was also named to the live semi-final round in the annual Fischoff Chamber Music Competition in South Bend, Indiana. Dr. Heim is currently the baritone saxophonist for the Junction Saxophone Quartet, a professional ensemble that performs regularly in the mid-Atlantic region. She has performed with the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, and the Roanoke Pops, and has appeared on stage with musicians including Natalie Cole, Bernadette Peters, Glen Campbell, The Four Tops, Boz Scaggs, John Ellis, Peter Bernstein, and Lee Konitz. Most recently, Dr. Heim performed with the Messiah College Faculty Chamber Players for a recording of Joseph Turrin’s Concertino for Eleven Winds, to be released on Klavier Records in 2014.
Along with teaching her private studio, Dr. Heim instructs woodwinds with the Shippensburg University Marching Band and the Northern High School Marching Band. She is an avid singer, recently performing in the chorus of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra’s concert performance of La Traviata with the Susquehanna Chorale. Dr. Heim regularly serves as a clinician and adjudicator of bands and jazz ensembles at local competitions.
