Gettysburg

Harper's Ferry

September 16, 2005

Today, sleeping in finally ended as we had our first battlefield visit of the semester. Our first stop of the semester was historic Harpers Ferry. The ride down was great as we all joked and laughed about things from the past week. For me, however, with the abundance of reading this semester, I found it a nice time to tune into some tunes and read. Our tour guide for the day was Dennis Frye (Gods and Generals), who works at both Harpers Ferry and Antietam; I even got to get my picture with him.

We finally got there around 10:30 AM
and started our tour of the area and
battlefield about 11:00. This was
when we finally got down to "business"
(Did someone say something about corn
cobbs?). Dennis was extremely helpful in
getting acquainted with the surrounding
topography and terrain which was a little
challenging to get out of a book. After
lengthy story of the battle, and many
trips back and forth to Bolivar Heights,
the tour finally moved to the town.

While in town, it rained, a lot. What a day to wear a white shirt and not bring an umbrella. Dennis' program finished up with John Brown's Raid in the Brown Museum, naturally, and as we headed back to the bus and concluded the outside portion of the tour, it stopped raining. Nature is always ironic. Looking at my schedule, Bull Run is next week, and I can't wait to see where the first campaign of the war started so check back for that update.
