The 2014 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize was awarded to Allen C. Guelzo, the Henry R. Luce Professor of the Civil War Era and Director of Civil War Era Studies, for his book Gettysburg: The Last Invasion. With co-laureate Martin P. Johnson of Miami University Hamilton, Guelzo will receive $25,000 and a bronze replica of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ bust, “Lincoln the Man” in a ceremony at the Union League Club in New York City on April 24.
Guelzo’s book, which enjoyed eight weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and earned the Fletcher Pratt Award of the New York Civil War Roundtable, has been hailed by reviewers as one of the most important Civil War campaign studies of our generation. Through the eyes of the commanders and common soldiers, Guelzo weaves a masterful narrative that vividly recreates the war’s cataclysmic battle.
Guelzo becomes the first three-time laureate in Lincoln Prize history. He won the prize in 2000 for his book Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President, and in 2005 for Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation: The End of Slavery in America.
