Finance Symposium - March 2, 2006 - Joseph Auditorium

Guest Speaker Barbara Robles, Associate Professor in the Arizona State University School of Social Work and Center for Community Development and Civil Rights presents "Wealth Creation in Latino Communities." Professor Robles' talk is based on recent work including a book chapter entitled, "Wealth Creation in Latino Communities: Latino Familites, Community Assets and Cultural Capital." Professor Robles is the co-editor of the forthcoming book, The Color of Wealth: The Story of the U.S. Racial Wealth Divide, from the New Press, and she has authored a number of scholarly articles related to the issue of wealth creation and ethnicity on the US border with Mexico. Support for the Finance Symposium is gratefully acknowledged from the Markell Charitable Trust, African American Studies, Latin American Studies, and the Gettysburg College Events Planning and Coordinating Committee.

Memberships, Workshops, Seminars:

Students who have taken Economics 101 and one course from those numbered 201-240, 243, and 245 can be considered for membership in Omicron Delta Epsilon, the national economics honorary society, if they have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or above in the major and overall. ODE and the Economics Department jointly sponsor numerous lectures by visiting economists during the academic year; ODE also sponsors frequent informal roundtable discussions on contemporary economic issues. Selected ODE members from Gettysburg participate in undergraduate economics conferences where students present their own papers to their peers from other colleges.

Economics majors are also eligible for membership in the social science honorary society, Pi Lambda Sigma, contingent upon meeting its academic standards. To qualify for Pi Lambda Sigma, students must complete 5 courses in their major and achieve a grade point average of 3.1.

The Economics Department receives information on numerous summer workshops and seminars in economics for which entrance is competitive. For example, the American Economic Association sponsors several summer workshops in economic theory and quantitative techniques for minority students with an interest, but not necessarily a major, in economics. Brochures on these and other programs are available in the departmental office, Glatfelter Hall 111.
