FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

These are answers to some frequently asked questions from Economics majors and minors. The answers below do not constitute a binding commitment by the department of Economics. See the Economics Department Chairperson for that.

Does Econ 420 count as a "course numbered 200 or higher" for the major?

No, it does not. Econ 420 (The Honors Research Seminar) is a course open by invitation to students with an approved senior honors thesis proposal.

Can I take Econ 352 instead of 350 to satisfy the Quantitative Methods requirement?

Only by permission of the Chair.

How do I know if a course I'm taking abroad satisfies a requirement of the Economics major?

Consult the list of "study abroad courses approved for Economics credit" on the Economics Department webpage. You need to have the Chair sign your course approval form to make this official.

For the Economics major, do I have to take one course numbered 250-299 and two numbered 300-399, or can I just take three numbered 300-399?

You can take three numbered 300-399. The most recent version of the Econ majors checklist makes this clear. Checklist available in Department Office located in Glatfelter G111D.

Can I use Math 107 in place of Econ 241 (Business and Economic Statistics)?

If you are an Economics major, the answer is yes. (But Econ 241 is still strongly recommended.) You still need to take Econ 350 (Quantitative Methods). If you are an Economics minor, the answer is no. You need to take two other core courses.

The requirements check list for Economics minors says that I need to take Introductory Economics (Econ 101) and two other "core courses" (Econ 241, 243, 245, 249, or 350). The "bridge courses" (Econ 201-239) are prerequisites for all of the core courses but do not seem to be required for the minor. What do I do?

A bridge course is required for all Economics minors, and the core courses do require a bridge course as a prerequisite.

I declared an Economics minor last year and took Econ 103 and 104. At the time, the requirement was that I take two core courses, one course numbered 201 or higher, and one numbered 250 or higher. Now the requirements have changed. Can I take one of the bridge courses (numbered 201-239) and still have it count for a minor?

Yes, but only because you've taken Econ 103 and 104. For students who took Econ 101, the additional courses required for a minor are a bridge course, two core courses, and two courses numbered 250 and above.

Can I take a course S/U and have it count towards my major or minor?

No.

I took Psychology 205 (Statistics), then decided to declare a minor in Economics. Can I count Psych 205 as Econ 241, thereby knocking off one of the required core courses?

No, you will have to take two other core courses. But if you were a major, we'd allow it since there would be no way to get credit for Econ 241 otherwise.

I became an economics major a couple of years ago. Now it looks like the requirements for the major have changed (103-104 used to be required, not it's 101-bridge course; Mgmt 153 used to substitute for Econ 350, now it doesn't; etc.). What requirements should I follow?

You're right, we have a new set of requirements for students starting in Fall 2004. Here's what you need to do:

If you have already taken 103-104 and Management 153, follow the old set of requirements: you need 241, 243, 245, 249; 3 courses numbered 250 and above, of which at least 2 have to be 300+; and a senior seminar.

If you have already taken 103-104 and have not taken Management 153, you should follow the new requirements, substituting 103-104 for the 101-bridge course sequence: you need 241, 243, 245, 249, 350; 3 courses numbered 250+, at least 2 which are 300+; and the senior seminar.

Courses in affiliated programs that have approved in the past for credit in Economics. See the Department of Economics Chairperson for formal approval.
