Adding Instructional Areas

If you already hold a Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate, you can add instructional areas by passing the appropriate PRAXIS subject tests for the areas you wish to add. For example, if you hold an Elementary (K-6) certificate and want to be certified to teach English at the middle school level, you could take the "Middle Level English" PRAXIS exam. Passing the exam would qualify you to add Middle Level English (7-9) to your Instructional Certificate.

Here's another example. If you hold a Biology (7-12) certificate and want to add General Science (7-12), you would take (and pass) the "General Science" PRAXIS exam.

Please note that several instructional areas are excluded from this policy. The following instructional areas cannot be added by passing a PRAXIS exam:
  • Elementary Education
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Special Education (all areas)
  • Reading Specialist will no longer be available as an add-on effective July 1, 2006

You can visit the Pennsylvania Department of Education website for more information about how to add instructional areas to a Pennsylvania certificate.
