The Writing Center, staffed by peer tutors and several English department faculty members, is an invaluable campus resource. Located on the ground floor of Breidenbaugh Hall, it's a place where students across all disciplines can come to talk about their work, discuss and clarify ideas, and polish their writing style.
The Center's methodical process can benefit any writer -- from the first-year student struggling with his or her first college paper . . . to the student writing an application letter . . . to the senior writing an honors thesis. The Writing Center also offers an exceptional opportunity for prospective teachers in any discipline.
Staff members practice collaborative learning techniques as they work one-on-one with their peers, stressing a "process approach" to writing and promoting techniques that involve steps and stages. For example:
All students are welcomed to take advantage of the Writing Center. Students may receive help with organizational or stylistic problems, or may work with a tutor to resolve specific grammatical errors that recur in their papers.
In each case, the writer will be provided with the necessary tools to make his or her own revisions.
William Lane, Director
Student tutors are trained to assist with all types of writing -- from lab reports to critical essays. Students can qualify for a position by securing a recommendation from any Gettysburg College professor, completing an interview with Professor Lane, submitting a writing sample, participating in the peer associate workshop, showing enthusiasm about working with their peers.
Potential tutors should contact Professor Lane at x6756 or send email to wlane@gettysburg.edu.
