Majors & Minors
|
At Gettysburg, students of English gain skills that give them an edge in any career: critical thinking, persuasive argumentation, close reading, and concise communication. Topics of study range from Old English poetry to contemporary film and world literature. Numerous courses focus on interdisciplinary inquiry. Approximately one-third of Gettysburg College English majors spend a semester studying abroad. A favorite program for English students is Advanced Studies in England at Bath, which is offered in association with University College, Oxford. Students also have opportunities to live and learn in London and at the University of Essex. Learn more about the Study Abroad Program. |

| MAJOR in ENGLISH The major in English requires eleven courses in English and American language and literature. To obtain the desired distribution of courses, majors elect courses from several categories. • 100-level introductory courses with such topics as Writing Through Literature, Writing the Classics, Native American Writing, and First-Year Seminars that focus on literature. • 200-level intermediate courses. • 300-level advanced courses. • 400-level seminar. To ensure that students experience a sense of the breadth of English and American literature, two of their eleven courses must focus on literature written before 1700 (Medieval, Renaissance, seventeenth-centure literature) and two of their eleven courses must focus on literature written between 1700 and 1900 (literature from the eighteenth and/or nineteenth centuries). |
| MAJOR in ENGLISH with WRITING CONCENTRATION English with a Writing Concentration is a relatively new major. It was designed for those students who wanted a concentration of writing courses while still earning an English degree. The major requires fourteen courses, more than the standard English major but less than the combination of an English major with a writing minor. Students receive a balance of literature and writing courses. |
| MINOR in ENGLISH An English minor requires six courses in English. Although it is not necessary to declare an English minor before your senior year, we encourage you to talk to an English professor if you are interested in pursing a minor. |
| MINOR in WRITING The writing minor is designed for students who enjoy writing and want to enhance their writing skills, no matter what discipline. The minor requires six courses with such topics as creative writing, forms of fiction writing, poetry writing, personal essay, writing the memoir, and editing. |
| MAJOR in ENGLISH with EDUCATION MINOR The English major can be combined with a minor in either elementary or secondary education, along with teaching certification. If you are interested in an education minor, you should discuss your intentions with your major advisor and with the chair of the Education Department, as you will need to plan your program carefully. Both the elementary and secondary education programs require a teaching semester in the senior year (or as an additional semester after graduation). |
