Course Description:
From She’s the Man to Ten Things I Hate About You to Julie Taymor’s most recent The Tempest, where the lead magician, Prospero, is played by a woman, artists have taken the Bard’s texts and adapted them for contemporary audiences. In this course, students will carefully analyze the Shakespeare texts, and explore ways that theatre makers in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have adapted them---into films, novels, and other plays. In addition, they will have the opportunity to produce their own adaptations of this timeless works, translating them into for a new audience.
