French Major

The French major curriculum is made up of two sequences:

1) A group of four required courses, three of which -- 300, 305, and 310 -- are taken first, and French 400 which must be taken in the spring of senior year.

2) A set of six electives chosen from among the other departmental offerings on the 300 and 400 levels. Individualized study may be taken only once as part of the minimum requirements for the major. These requirements may be waived in special cases at the discretion of the Department.

French Majors must spend at least one semester studying abroad in a program approved by the Department.

Expectation of Majors

It is expected that, besides devoting all necessary time to their courses, majors will support enthusiastically the co-curricular program which the Department offers. In fact, students enrolled in courses at the 300 and 400 levels are required to participate in several activities sponsored by the Department and the Cercle Francais. Examples of such activities include:
--attendance at French films
--attendance at the Table Francaise
--attendance at Departmental Lectures
--attendance at functions of the Cercle Francais

(receptions, meetings, off-campus trips, special meals, etc.)

--participation in all other gatherings for majors sponsored by the Department

Suggested Course Schedules

Study Abroad
Juniors and first semester seniors who have completed French 300 or its equivalent and who have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average may study for a semester or an entire academic year in our affiliated foreign study program in Avignon, France under the auspices of the Institute for American Universities. Both credits and grades will be transferred.  The number of courses accepted for credit toward the major is limited to three for those who study abroad for a semester and to five for those who study abroad for a year.  All courses taken will count for graduation credit.  Financial aid may be applied to participation in the program.
