Italian Study Abroad
The Department of French and Italian at Gettysburg College now offers students the opportunity of spending the Fall semester in Florence. Learning a foreign language has become a critical step for understanding the shift toward a global perspective that is so dear to a liberal arts college such as Gettysburg College. Italy, one of the G-8 countries and a member of the European Union, is known not only for its history, art, literature and culinary delights, but also for the role it plays in international law, politics and economy.
Syracuse University in Florence serves as our official affiliated program. All courses offered at Syracuse University, Florence have been approved by Gettysburg College, thus students may choose from an array of courses in Italian language, civilization, history and literature, as well as from courses taught in English in areas as diverse as philosophy, economics and Women's Studies, just to name a few. Hence, students may choose to go to Florence to continue their language requirement, to diversify their options for requirements for a minor, or simply to pursue their interest in Italian language, literature and culture.
For students who have completed Italian 102 at Gettysburg (or equivalent).
Gettysburg College offers a Fall Term in Florence in Syracuse's Option I consisting of ITA 201 (Italian III) plus ITA 200.1 LAC (Community and Culture III), the combination of which fulfills Italian 201 at Gettysburg. In addition, students will take three 3 credit courses. These three additional courses will be in English. Students will then get credit for four Gettysburg College courses.
For students who have completed Italian 202 at Gettysburg (or equivalent) but do not wish to minor in Italian Studies.
Gettysburg College offers a Fall Term in Florence in Syracuse's Option I, consisting of ITA 202 (Italian IV) plus ITA 200.2 (Community and Culture IV), the combination of which will transfer as one advanced language course. Students will also take three additional 3 credit courses. ITA 202 course in Florence is not a duplicate of Gettysburg's ITAL 202. Students will then get credit for four Gettysburg College courses.
For Students who have completed Italian 202 at Gettysburg (or equivalent) and wish to minor in Italian Studies.
Gettysburg College offers two plans, both available during the Fall Term:
A] From Syracuse's Option I program, students will take ITA 325 (Advanced Language Usage), plus one 3 credit Italian Topics course, either in English or Italian, approved by both a faculty member of the Italian program and the Chair of the French and Italian Department. The combination of the two courses will transfer as one advanced Italian language course. In addition, students must take three 3 credit courses. If students plan to satisfy two course requirements for the Italian Studies minor in Florence, then one of the additional three 3 credit courses must also be an Italian Topics course approved by a faculty member of the Italian program and the Chair of the French and Italian Department. Students will get credit for four Gettysburg College courses.
Below is an example of a semester's worth of courses that will satisfy two requirements for the Italian minor:
ITA 325 + ARC 335 (Renaissance Architecture in Italy, 1400-1520) = 1 course requirement.
HST 400.6 (Family and Gender in Contemporary Italy) = 1 course for requirement.
ANT 400.8 (A History of Witchcraft) = 1 elective course
PSC 353 (International Organizations) = 1 elective course
B] For particularly well prepared and advanced students, we offer the opportunity to take a 6 credit intensive course in Italian language at the "Centro di Cultura per Stranieri" (Cultural Center for Foreign Studies) in Florence, from Syracuse's Option II. In addition to this course, which will transfer as one advanced Italian language course, students will take three 3 credit hour courses at Syracuse in Florence. Students will get credit for four Gettysburg courses.
