Amy Sanderson, '06: I loved being able to cook my own English food. It was great learning from a different perspective and having the opportunity to take classes that aren't offered at Gettysburg. Sundays were great: watching "football" at the pub with a pint, followed by Quiz night - and I loved "fancy dress" pub crawls!

Kristen Blanco, '99: Reflections on "London Days"

Martha Arterberry--Professor of Psychology:
It was a joy spending a semester with 14 of Gettysburg's most talented students! They were bright, curious, adventurous, and responsible people. I hated to give them back to their respective departments and advisors once we returned to Gettysburg.

Donna Orzell, '98:
London was great. I loved the George and of course the pubs and theatres were a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, with all its bizarre characters and beautiful staging. The London Underground was pretty cool. Whenever I visit London, the tube is what first tells me that I'm there. And of course, who could forget to 'mind the gap.' I'm the only American on my flat. The majority are Brits or Greeks, and one Italian. Quite a refreshing change from the G-burg scene!!

Heidi Maurer, '98:
I like that fact that it's very easy to travel any where you would like to go. I like the fact that the students and professors here are down to earth and very helpful. I liked the month in London, that's when I got to know all the people from the Gettysburg group. The pubs in England are really nice and there a nice place to hang out with your friends and enjoy a late-night pint.

Adam Fernandez, '98:
What I enjoyed most about this program was the ability to do and see so much. The month in London was by far one of the best experiences of my life. From going to musicals, plays, ballets, operas in the West End to taking a nice leisurely walk in the beautiful Hyde and Regents Parks. The museums that the group had the privelege to see and the various day trips to Canterbury, Oxford, and Bath were all great.

The five days I was able to spend in Paris were phenomenal! It is one of the most magical places I have ever been and I really cannot wait to get back there again.

Clearly the best part about being at a British university was living in the flat. Learning some of the many British colloquialisms has been truly enlightening. I have made life-long friendships with my British and Greek flatmates and know that I will have to come back to visit someday. The classes are certainly different than at Gettysburg but seeing how the system works here was also very educational. I have enjoyed all of my classes and all of my lecturers and class tutors have been excellent. I will definitely miss being here and the friends I have made.

Molly Thomas, '98:
I would have to say that what I most enjoyed is the flat life. Living with 15 other people from all over the world was a really neat experience. In addition, hearing their views on America really made me stop and think about what America is all about and what it means to me. That is something I never really considered before, but now I have a whole new persepective. It was also really great just to be at a university that has so many people from different parts of the world.

I am having a great time at the University of Essex. I enjoy my flat mates a lot and I like my classes. I have joined crew which is a lot of fun. Try to get involved at Essex if you come because you can get a lot out of it. The month in London was great. There was a lot to do and much to see.

Melinda Brashears, '99
My flat is great, classes are good and everything is going fantastic. I wish I were here for a whole year!!

Staying in London was a great experience. We got to see and do so much! And being able to travel is great. I've already been to France and Scotland, and am spending Thanksgiving in Paris. All of Europe is at our fingertips--it's really a blast.
