Philosophy
Offered as: Major , Minor
The study of philosophy is an integral part of a liberal arts education, sharpening the mind, developing critical thinking, and leading to new insights into the nature of things. Philosophy explores many of humankind's most fundamental questions, such as: What does it mean to be human? How do we understand religion? What is beauty? How do we distinguish right from wrong? Is life meaningful?
This is not simply an academic exercise, but is vital to understanding international conflict, medical ethics, the use and abuse of technology, and many other contemporary issues. Indeed, because of what it examines and the way it goes about that examination, the study of philosophy -- whether as a major or by integrating philosophy into another area of study -- provides a strong foundation for graduate school and for any career that requires thinking.
