Project CLEA

Project CLEA-Contemporary Laboratory Experiences in Astronomy-is a series of laboratory exercises that use digital data and color images to illustrate techniques of modern astronomy. The labs, which have been developed by the Gettysburg physics department, are designed for use by high school and college classes and students. Each lab includes a dedicated computer program, a student manual, and an instructor's guide.

CLEA labs have enjoyed widespread use by astronomy students and faculty throughout the U.S. and around the world. The program has earned enthusiastic feedback from public and private high schools across the country, from leading colleges such as the University of Virginia and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and from teachers in schools as far away as Australia.

Advancing Science

Advancing Science is an outreach program that gives Pennsylvania students from kindergarten through grade 12 opportunities to learn science by doing science. A collaboration between the Gettysburg biology department and Pennsylvania schools, the program takes vans full of science equipment to schools throughout the state, where trained educators work with schools and teachers on a variety of hands-on science activities. Students engage in creative problem-solving and work on experiments that use scientific equipment not typically available in their schools. By bringing students into the process of science in new ways, these activities are designed to spark interest in science at an early age and sustain interest throughout the pre-college years.

Advancing Science is supported by Gettysburg College, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Whitaker Foundation, AMP/Tyco Electronics, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

The Gettysburg Semester

Taking a semester to study off-campus has become a regular feature of most college or university undergraduates' lives, and sooner or later you' might be thinking about off-campus study yourself.

But what if that off-campus program wasn't on a different continent or in a different country, but instead in a different time?

And what if that time was the 19th century, and the location was Gettysburg?

Since 1998 Gettysburg College has offered an unusual off-campus program -- the Gettysburg Semester. Every fall Gettysburg welcomes a select group of undergraduates to a total-immersion semester in Civil War studies. Gettysburg Semester students take two core seminars devoted to cutting-edge Civil War scholarship, plus one course from Gettysburg's Civil War Era Studies program. In addition, Gettysburg Semester students involve themselves in internships with nearby Civil War-related agencies.

Gettysburg Semester students live in a Civil War theme residence, The Appleford, on the Gettysburg campus, with voice-mail and computer connections, microwave/refrigerator units, and access to all of the College's library and recreational resources.
