Lisa Portmess explores philosophical issues in law, ethics, international affairs and neuroscience, and philosophical traditions beyond the boundaries of western philosophy. Her courses include Philosophy of Law, Ethics, Philosophy of Mind, Ancient Philosophy and Philosophy East and West, and first year seminars in Mind, Brain and Consciousness and Puzzles of Mind and World.
She has spent a year in the U.S. Congress as an American Philosophical Association Congressional Fellow and was a resident fellow at the Centre for Philosophy and Public Affairs at The University of St. Andrews. She has studied Asian Philosophy at The University of Hawaii's NIH Institute for Comparative Philosophy in Honolulu, and Islamic history and philosophy at The American University of Beirut in Lebanon.
She has published, with Kerry Walters, Ethical Vegetarianism: From Pythagoras to Peter Singer, and Religious Vegetarianism: From Hesiod to the Dalai Lama. Her recent work has focused on justice and international affairs. She has most recently published "Military Tribunals: The Problem of Evidence" as part of the St. Andrews Studies in Philosophy and Public Affairs.
