Majoring in Philosophy

THE MAJOR IN PHILOSOPHY consists of at least nine courses in philosophy as follows:

•  One or two introductory courses (101, 103, 105, 107, 108 or 109)

•  Logic (211)

•  At least two courses in history of philosophy (205, 206, 207 or 208)

•  One or more advanced courses (300 level)

•  Senior Seminar (400)

In special cases a student may be granted permission to substitute a related course at Gettysburg or from another institution for one of the above requirements, with the exception of the Senior Seminar and Senior Thesis.

Each philosophy major is assigned an advisor from among Department faculty. Senior Seminar is offered in the fall semester.

Senior Thesis is recommended for all majors and a prerequisite for departmental honors is taken as individualized study in either the fall or the spring term. Students work closely with faculty on a subject of their choice.
