New Departmental Faculty

  • Gary Mullen, who has served as Visiting Assistant Professor, has received a tenure-track appointment beginning fall 2012 as Assistant Professor.

  • Vernon Cisney has received appointment as Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy for 2012-2013.
Vernon W. Cisney recently received his PhD in Philosophy from Purdue University, where he completed a dissertation on the concept of difference in the philosophies of Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida. He was awarded the Philosophy Department’s Teaching Award for the 2011-2012 Academic Year. His research interests are 19th and 20th Century Continental European Philosophy, primarily Nietzsche, Phenomenology, and Poststructuralism, and he maintains strong interests in Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, the History of Philosophy (Ancient and Modern), and Philosophy of Film. Specifically he is interested in problems of agency, virtue, and justice in the history of Continental thought, along with questions regarding the benefits and limitations of markets, the ethical limits of state power, and the relation between all of these. He is in the process of revising his thesis for publication (proposal under consideration at Edinburgh University Press); in addition, he is co-authoring with Leonard Lawlor a philosophical reader’s guide for Derrida’s Voice and Phenomenon, and he recently edited, with Nicolae Morar, a volume for The University of Chicago Press entitled Biopower: Ethics and Politics in the 21st Century—the completed manuscript is now under review. Cisney is extremely excited about the upcoming year at Gettysburg College!
