Physics professors Sharon Stephenson and Bret Crawford are spending this fall semester in London, where they are leading Gettysbug College students in a seminar.
Entitled "The London Laboratory: Locating Ourselves in Space, Time, and Culture," it will examine the systems people use to situate themselves both in physical terms - time and space - and in societal terms - as members of a culture. Drawing on material from physics, history, sociology, visual arts, and literature, the course positions students within the "laboratory" of London, developing skills such as navigation and naked-eye astronomy, as well as exploring the history of the London Underground, timekeeping and a history of Britain's oldest beverage. In daily seminars, experiences from frequent tours and museum excursions will be connected with the assigned readings - and broader questions such as the meaning of "place" in defining ourselves.
