Standing Waves (with long spring)
To demonstrate standing waves on a spring.
Have a student hold each end of the spring by the little ring. Have the students start to send waves into the spring until a single standing wave is made. After the students have accomplished one standing wave have them double their frequency to make two standing waves. The students should continue to increase their frequency until they can no longer move up to the next number of standing waves.
You can have the students either both move the spring or have one of them cause the waves while the other keeps their side still. When this demonstration was tried we were able to easily create 4 nodes at one time. Using the ring at the end of the spring will prevent any more damage to the spring.
