Prof. Abigail Scholer, Assistant Professor of Psychology, recently presented a poster entitled, "Increasing Goal Commitment: Decoupling Regulatory Mode from Regulatory Phase," at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology Conference in Las Vegas. In general, this line of research examines motivational factors that increase the likelihood that individuals will commit to change, particularly when they are ambivalent about it (e.g., quitting smoking, starting exercising). Specifically, we find that increasing locomotion motivation (concern with moving from state to state) in deliberation leads to increased goal commitment.
