The MIR (Multiple Inquiries) Goal
All Gettysburg College students must take a social science class as part of MIR (Multiple Inquiries) goal the Gettysburg Curriculum. Both sociology and anthropology introductory courses (SOC 101 and ANTH 103) satisfy this goal. Capstone Seminars for Majors
All Gettysburg College students must take a capstone seminar in their senior year. Sociology and anthropology capstone seminars enable students to synthesize knowledge accrued in other classes while thinking about how to apply anthropological and sociological knowledge to real-life situations and career choices. General Objectives of the Curriculi in Sociology and Anthropology
In synchrony with Gettysburg College's liberal arts curriculum, sociology and anthropology have designed courses to meet a set of general learning objectives.

*see below for the specific learning goals of both sociology and anthropology.

  1. To work consistently toward developing and improving a rigorous course of study in sociology and anthropology within the liberal arts setting. 
     
  2. To emphasize "logical, precise thinking and clear use of language, both spoken and written," in communicating sociological and anthropological ideas.
     
  3. To provide a program of studies that will allow motivated, qualified students to pursue professional education in a variety of fields, including graduate study in sociology and anthropology.
     
  4. To acquaint students with the major theoretical perspectives in sociology and anthropology.
     
  5. To introduce students to sociological and anthropological research methods, including research design, data collection, statistical analysis, computer use, and ethnographic fieldwork.
     
  6. To expand opportunities for students to pursue internships, independent study, and active learning so they can acquire first-hand experiences in applying sociology and anthropology and explore career possibilities.
     
  7. To develop the ability to analyze social situations, groups, and institutions, and to cultivate the understanding necessary to modify them.
     
  8. To develop the ability to understand cultural systems and practices through in-depth and cross-cultural analyses.
     
  9. To improve understanding of the social actions and perceptions of people in our own society and in others.
     
  10. To assist students in acquiring the capacity to use and contribute to the growing body of sociological and anthropological knowledge.
     
  11. To relate sociology and anthropology to other academic disciplines and fields of knowledge.
     
  12. To stimulate self-directed intellectual growth that will continue throughout life.
