Service Learning Projects in Sociology & Anthropology

Many anthropology and sociology students are involved in service learning activities in the local community and abroad. The Gettysburg College Center for Public Service matches students with a wide range of volunteer projects in Adams County and coordinates service learning trips to other states and countries. These activities give students a chance to put their academic studies of social problems into practice in a way that directly contributes to social change, which in turn feeds back into their courses. Some of the students who have been especially active in public service are:

  • Sarah Brooks: At the Center for Public Service, Sarah helped coordinate Adult Education programs such as prison tutoring, Adopt-a-Grandparent, a Thanksgiving basket drive, and classes in sign language. She was also a volunteer intern at Holy Redeemer Hospital, where she helped plan fund-raising events.
  • Meghan Sherwood: Meghan tutored migrant Mexican children at Generacion Diez in Gettysburg, volunteered at the Prince of Peace soup kitchen, worked with senior citizens at Green Acres Nursing Home, and worked in Sandtown, an inner-city section of Baltimore where Gettysburg College is actively involved.
  • Tracy Werblow: With her interests in anthropology, Tracy was a student leader for a Service-Learning trip to Mexico, studied abroad in France, and is active in Amnesty International and the International Club. She has also done local service such as tutoring at the high school, working with the elderly, and cleaning up hiking trails.
  •  Kate Costella: Among other activities, Kate went to Mexico City and South Carolina on service-learning trips; volunteered at a Survivors shelter for abused women, coordinated the children's program at the Adams County Homeless shelter, and helped build houses with Habitat for Humanity.
