Study Abroad Programs in Sociology & Anthropology
A growing number of students in our department are expanding their horizons by taking a semester to study abroad. The Gettysburg College office of Off-Campus Studies helps students locate and enroll in academic programs abroad that serve their particular interests. Some of these programs are affiliated with the College; many are especially well-suited for sociology and anthropology majors.
In order for students studying abroad to receive course credit towards the anthropology or sociology majors, they must . . . INFO TO BE ADDED SOON
Here are some of the students who have recently returned from study abroad programs:
- Tanya Dunsey: During the spring semester of 2006, Tany participated in an affiliated program (by SIT, the School for International Training) that took her to Jaipur in Rajasthan, India. While there Tanya travelled quite a lot, including a one-month trip to Varanasi (the holiest city in the world for Hindus), where she conducted a month-long independent study project on the effects on tourism on the holy city. She also took several classes that will count towards her anthropology and philosophy majors.
- Christina Natallelo: During the spring semster of 2005, Christina participated in the "Gettysburg in South Africa at Rhodes University" program. She lived in Grahamstown, where she experienced what life is like in post-apartheid South Africa. The chance to observe the slow erosion of racial divisions and the role of women in the economy and social activism complemented her Anthropology and Women's Studies majors. When not taking classes, Christina visited nearby townships, hiked rugged mountains, and enjoyed the beaches.
- Andy Buck: During the autumn semester of 1998, Andy took Anthropology courses at the School for Oriental and African Studies in London. Besides learning about ethnology and archaeology, he gained valuable cross-cultural experience by living with a British family and adapting to a foreign society, which he found surprisingly different from the U.S.
- Jessica Kolodziejski: As a sociology major, Jessica spent the fall of 1998 in Florence, Italy, where she took a course on family structures and gender roles, while living with a family where the very subjects she studied could be observed in practice.
- Jennifer Price: During her junior year, Jen studied anthropology, political sociology, social psychology, and philosophy at the Gettysburg program at Essex University in London. She urges every Sociology and Anthropology major to spend a semester abroad because "whenever you immerse yourself in another culture, you're going to learn, no matter what."
- Peter Crumbaker: Anthropology-sociology major Peter Crumbaker spent the fall of 1998 studying in Recife, Brazil through the School for International Training. He lived with a Brazilian family, studied Portuguese, culture, and development, and then conducted an independent ethnographic field study of a small fishing village for three weeks.
