Bachelor of Arts in Music

The Bachelor of Arts Degree program combines a core curriculum of traditional music classes with a unique elective program. Students have the opportunity to tailor part of their course of study to correspond with their professional interests. In close collaboration with a faculty advisor, students create a "strand" of carefully selected electives to help prepare them for career options, graduate school, or other goals.

Strands could include music performance, music history, music theory, piano pedagogy, music management, church music, music technology, composition, and jazz studies. A student developing a strand will consolidate electives and performance opportunities in the chosen area. Additionally, the senior recital will reflect - through performance or lecture-demonstration - the strand that the student has pursued.

The combination of the core curriculum of music theory and history, conducting, applied lessons, and ensemble participation with this special elective program provides a degree that is uniquely suited to meet the professional needs of the individual student.

Integrating the B.A. in Music with another major area of study is also possible. Many Gettysburg students have successfully completed a double major that combines a B.A. in Music with Psychology, History, Political Science, Religion, Biology, and others.
