Outdoor Sculpture

With great pleasure the Department of Visual Arts invites you to view the rotating exhibition of large-scale public sculpture at Gettysburg College, entitled Private Place, Public Space. This exhibition was conceived of through discussions I had with Greg Islan, Gettysburg alumnus ('70) and with our department faculty and students. Greg, a Business Administration major, took art classes at Gettysburg and the classes and professors instilled in him a life-long appreciation for the arts. Through his generosity, Gettysburg has been able to bring several large-scale sculptures to our campus on a long-term loan basis. These works complement the wonderful Martin Puryear piece, Sentinel, which is part of Gettysburg's permanent collection. Greg also joined forces with Gettysburg College to purchase the magnificent glass installation in the foyer of the Science Center by artist William Carlson.

The pieces in the exhibition are:

Additional sculptures will continue to be brought to campus during the academic years to come.

Our thanks to Greg Islan for his support of this project and to Dan DeNicola, Jennie Mingolelli and our friends in Facilities Services for their help, guidance and hard work.? A special thanks to Molly Hutton, Director of the Schmucker Art Gallery, for her fine essay on this exhibition. And many thanks go to the photography talents of Bill Dowling of?New Oxford, PA
