Neal J. Smatresk '73

A biology major at Gettysburg, Neal J. Smatresk '73 received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin and post-doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He served on the faculty of the Department of Biology at the University of Texas at Arlington as professor, department chair, and dean of science. He concentrated his research on gaining a better understanding how the respiratory neurobiology of vertebrates changed in the evolutionary transition from water to air breathing. His work garnered substantial grant support and resulted in numerous publications and presentations.
Smatresk was appointed academic officer of the University of Hawaii at Manoa and led that institution to national and international prominence for research. In 2007 he joined the University of Nevada Las Vegas as executive vice president and provost, becoming president in 2009. Neal and Deborah Smatresk have a daughter, Kristen, and son, Erik.
