Gettysburg College Veterans Memorial Dedication
The Gettysburg College Veterans Memorial was dedicated during Homecoming/Family Weekend on Saturday, October 22, 2011, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The ceremony took place at the memorial's location outside of Musselman Stadium.
The Gettysburg College Veterans Memorial honors alumni, parents, and friends of the College who have served or who are serving in the armed forces of our country.
The memorial is made of granite and has six embedded brass emblems of the five armed forces and the Merchant Marine along the crest of the memorial. Three flag poles fly the national colors, the Pennsylvania flag and the Gettysburg College flag. The inscription on the memorial states the college's appreciation to those who have served.
The memorial is located to the right of the main entrance to the stadium and is visible from the outside and inside of the stadium. The three flags which comprise a major part of the memorial will be flown for all events associated with the stadium. The national colors are illuminated so the flag can be flown at night.
The idea for the memorial was inspired by Gettysburg College alumnus, K. Richard Brunner, Jr. '58, from Alexandria, Virginia, who felt the college needed a memorial to honor the many sacrifices its alumni, parents and friends have made since 1832 in the service of their country. "It is heartwarming for me to see the outpouring of support that has been shown by our alumni, parents and friends in the construction of this important memorial", says Brunner. "It is a fitting tribute to our veterans".
A fundraising effort in support of the memorial is underway.
