Students to donate community service during annual GIV Day

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - On Aug. 24, one day after moving into residence halls and meeting new roommates, hundreds of first-year students at Gettysburg College will take their place in the community as the newest volunteers.

More than 400 members of the class of 2010 will participate in the College's annual GIV (Gettysburg Is Volunteering) Day, donating their service at more than 40 local sites such as St. James Lutheran Child Care, Head Start, Gettysburg Recreation Park and the Gettysburg Hospital. An additional 85 returning students, faculty and staff will be participating as project leaders. Students will be at the sites beginning about 8:30 a.m. The event is the kick-off program for Gettysburg College's Center for Public Service.

One student has been particularly busy during the summer preparing for GIV Day, senior Kate Hargrove, GIV Day 2006 coordinator and a psychology major from Westmont, N.J.

"GIV Day encourages students to think critically and act compassionately, which is central to the college's mission of experiential education. It also introduces first-year students to engage in the Gettysburg community in a unique way," Hargrove said. "GIV Day has been cited by many students as a significant influence on their choice to continue work with the community throughout their collegiate experience."

First-year students this year total approximately 724, coming from 30 states and 11 foreign countries. The class of 2010 was drawn from the strongest and largest applicant pool in the College's history. Some 41 percent of applicants were admitted. Total enrollment this year is forecast at approximately 2,600. The first day of classes is Aug. 28.

Gettysburg College is a highly selective four-year residential college of liberal arts and sciences. It is located on a 200-acre campus adjacent to Gettysburg National Military Park. The college was founded in 1832.
