"Allen chaperoned all the dances, and I was on many parent committees when our children were in high school. Now, we support the new opportunities that the College offers Robia and Nick through participation in the Gettysburg Fund." — Deborah Smith P'11, P'13.

Physician and epidemiologist Allen Herman is a consultant on community-based health improvement intervention in under-served areas of the southeastern United States. Deborah Smith, a gynecologist at Whitman-Walker Clinic in Washington, DC, focuses her work on women with HIV/AIDS. Despite their busy schedules, they give back to Gettysburg in many ways. As members of the Parents Advisory Board, Allen and Deborah advise College administrative offices, serve as ambassadors for the College, and donate annually to the Gettysburg Fund.

The Smith-Herman students are blazing their own paths through Gettysburg College. Robia ’11 is the Vice President of Gamma Phi Beta and a college tour guide, as well as a member of the Track and Field team for two years, the Invisible Children Club, and the Dance Team. Nick ’13 is a member of the Men’s Rugby team and Phi Gamma Delta. He also participates in the Eisenhower Institute’s “Inside Politics” and “Troubled Waters” programs.

The family’s connection to Gettysburg began through Gettysburg alumnus Eric Monheim ‘87, who was Robia and Nick’s college counselor at Sidwell Friends School.
