A fury of goals in the third secure Gettysburg's victory against CNU
With the expansion of their schedule, Gettysburg has opened up to playing a number of teams they have never played before but who are definitely making a name for themselves in the ACHA. Christopher Newport University, out of Newport News, VA was one of these new up and coming teams in the ACHA. CNU had recently toppled MDCHA opponent Salisbury on two occasions, as well as last season's MDCHA champions Loyola. The undefeated CNU Captains graciously made the long trip to Harrisburg to face the Bullets, who knew this game was going to be a serious test.
The CNU Captains showed know sign of jet lag as right off the opening faceoff and on their first shot of the game were able to roof it past Junior goaltender Cory Waldron. Gettysburg would waste no time as they were awarded a powerplay and only 40 seconds after CNU's goal Sophomore Ryan Flanagan would rip one past the CNU netminder to tie the game at one. The game would stay tied as both teams would visit the penalty box frequently but kill off their respective penalties. Just past midway through the period Gettysburg was once again on the powerplay and Junior Dave Frascarelli banged home a rebound off a shot by Sophomore Mark Bouchard. However, one minute later CNU would even the score with another blast past goaltender Waldron. CNU would then take their second lead of the game as with three minutes remaining in the period they scored to make it 3-2. But it was Gettysburg that would take the momentum in to the locker room as Senior Captain Jackson Ferguson rifled home a shot with one minute remaining.
The Bullets used that momentum as they headed in to the second period and while killing off a penalty Junior Phil Deyette would slip one past the CNU goalie for a short handed goal. Gettysburg did not stop there as Freshman Matt Simeoni would score two minutes later and again a minute after that and gave the Bullets a commanding three goal lead. CNU would not be deterred and clawed back in to it with two goals of their own. CNU would then almost tied the game with a goal that was called back due to a high stick. Gettysburg's Deyette would take this opportunity and score another goal on a beautiful give and go with Simeoni and roof a wicked backhand with only minutes remaining in the period giving the Bullets a 7-5 lead.
However, Gettysburg would be too comfortable with their lead to start the third and CNU capitalized to pull within one goal. As the time was winding down in a one goal game, Gettysburg would turn on the jets. Starting with Freshman Cory Jackmuff who took a blast from the point through a screen in front. Next it was freshman Matt Incledon who would blast one from the point and had it tipped in front to give the Bullets a three goal lead. Simeoni and Frascarelli would add another goal a piece and Waldron would only give up one more as time wound down and the Bullets ran away at the end with a 11-7 victory. Waldron faced 41 shots on the night.
The Bullets would like to thank all of their family and friends who braved the weather to come to the game. The Bullets would also like to extend a thanks to Christopher Newport for making the trip to PA for a great matchup. Gettysburg takes on rival Dickinson tonight, October 20, again at Twin Ponds East and they invite all to attend and support the Bullets in this MDCHA matchup. |
