Bullets fight back but come one short against tough goaltending

Riding high off of their win against Mount St. Mary's the Bullet hockey team was looking to win their second game of the season against former Mason Dixon opponent, George Washington. Gettysburg knew that this game was going to be completely different in terms of competition than the Mount game, and had to pressure them early. However, this would not be the case as the Bullets began the game very flat.

When the game got underway it seemed it was all GW as the Bullets could not find their game. Five minutes in to the game Gettysburg found themselves short handed and GW wasted little time as they put one past senior goaltender, Rich Sommerkorn to take the early 1-0 lead. With six minutes remaining still in the first period Gburg had another breakdown which resulted in a GW breakaway and another goal, leaving the Bullets down by two after one period of play.

Heading in to the second period Gettysburg needed a wake up call. They were only able to muster seven shots on goal in the first period and really did not test GW's goaltender. The Bullets knew they needed to spark their offense if they wanted a chance to get back in to the game. The Bullets came out flying and began hitting the GW goaltender with a hailstorm of pucks. Gettysburg was awarded numerous powerplays in the second period but shot after shot, they could not get past the GW goaltender. Being down by only two goals they knew the next goal was crucial and with just over three minutes left in the period Gettysburg thought they had that all important goal when Freshman Matt Incledon had received a pass all alone in front of the net, only to have the play whistled dead on a penalty, seconds before he buried it the back of the net. This penalty would prove even more detrimental as it left the Bullets short handed and once again on the power play GW capitalized and Gettysburg now had to go in to the third period down 3-0.

Still not discouraged by being down 3-0, Gettysburg knew they had played well in the second and dominated almost the whole period, and only needed to figure out how to beat the goaltender. Like crumbling the walls of a medieval castle the Bullets kept up the constant barrage. Finally while on the powerplay midway through the period Senior captain Jackson Ferguson buried one in the back of the net on a pass from Luke Archambault who took it the length of the ice from goaltender Sommerkorn, who also received an assist on the play. Now down 3-1 the momentum seemed to be swung in Gettysburg's favor, but minutes later a giveaway would lead to a shot that would deflect past Sommerkorn and once again GW lead by three.

Gettysburg would not be deterred and pressed on and two minutes later Mark Bouchard banged home a rebound and made the score 4-2. With time winding down Gettysburg took a timeout as they were awarded a face off in GW's zone. From that faceoff Sophomore Phil Deyette took the puck and roofed it past the GW goaltender and the Bullets were within one goal. Pulling their goaltender in the final minute gave them the extra attacker to try and stuff home a tying goal that could send the game in to overtime. But unfortunately it would be the GW goaltender that would come out on top as the Bullets could not complete the comeback and fell 4-3.

George Washington's goaltender faced fifty shots and turned away all but the three. A few clangs off the post and deflections just wide helped him along the way but it was not to be as he held his ground and Gettysburg went to 1 and 1 on the season.

We would like to thank all the fans in attendance and Gettysburg next travels to Altoona, PA to faceoff in an Invitational tournament where they hope to bring home a tournament championship.
