2009/2010 Season Recap

2009-10 Gettysburg College Ice Hockey Team

Gettysburg entered the 2009-10 season with a lot of new faces and big expectations coming off their disappointing finish in the semi-final game of the MDCHA playoffs. All-time leading scorer and team captain Phil Deyette was gone, as was starting goaltender Cory Waldron. Many new faces made their debut for the Bullets and hoped to get the team back to the top of the MDCHA.

2009-10 CaptainsThe Bullets started with a win over Mount St. Mary's, but quickly fell into a rut, beating Maryland in conference play but getting swept at two early season showcase tournaments. Sophomore goaltender Pete Dawson was forced to bear all of the burden in goal as the team's only goalie for the entire season. Senior Captain Mark Bouchard stepped up to fill the leadership and scoring void with help from his assistant captains, senior defenseman Ryan Flanagan and junior forward Matt Simeoni. But many new faces stepped up as well, with thirteen rookies seeing action over the course of the season.

Gettysburg hit bottom after a demoralizing 10-4 loss to rival Dickinson, but turned things around heading into winter break, beating American, taking East Stroudsburg to the brink, and getting revenge on Dickinson 4-2 in a rematch several weeks later. The 3rd annual alumni game was a great success, with many alums making the trek down to play some old-time-hockey and watch the current team play. Finally, the Bullets were back with authority in the playoffs, routing the Mount in the first round and trouncing American in the semifinals. But their season ended just a bit short once again, falling in the championship game to Dickinson by a score of 5-3.

2010 Alumni GameDespite once again coming up just a bit short, the Bullets matured as a team and gained valuable experience. Four players were recognized with post-season accolades, and seniors Bouchard, Flanagan, Jake Asplundh, and Dan Willman graduated after many years of hard work and great service to the team. And after spending four years as a player, one year as an assistant coach, and the 2009-10 season at the helm, head coach Garrett Gaydosh '08 finally left his alma mater, to be replaced by a familiar face behind the bench in Coach Eric Esser '03.
