Flag Football
2008 Playoffs
With impeccable timing and drama the gales of November came early, lending plenty of blistery weather to the 2008 Flag Football playoffs. With the sun down and meat locker temperatures, 8 men's and 6 coed clubs remained from the 33 team field that set out in early October to battle under the lights of Clark Field. Going into the single elimination playoffs, the audaciously named Back to Back? looked poised to replace the question mark with an exclamation point after traversing the regular season undefeated. Standing in their way were 7 equally qualified opponents including 2007 Men's B League Champion, The Noise, and the only other undefeated squad in ATO.
The Semi Final round saw Phi Sig turn away The Noise by a 39-20 count, and ATO make a huge
statement in a battle of undefeated teams by throwing a 59-0 shutout against the defending champs. Only time will tell, but the abysmal offensive output by Back to Back? could have marked 3 year starting quarterback Scotty Vladyka's last intramural game. In the championship showdown, Phi Sig and ATO squared off with hopes of hoisting the t-shirts and being immortalized in Gettysburg College lore. A tightly fought contest included a game ending comeback that brought Phi Sig back to within one with only seconds remaining. The options were clear; go for one and the tie or two and the win. Not since Tom Osborne's 1983 call that cost Nebraska a National Title has there been such a legendary and controversial decision in college athletics. Captain Joey Osborne (loose family relation) opted to follow in Cornhusker tradition and line up for the win, unfortunately, the results were identical leaving ATO the one point margin of victory.
The Coed side of the bracket was more of the same as ATO & Co found itself facing a
familiar foe in Phi Sig & Friends for the title. Inspired by the emotional lead of one Lynn O'Connell, Phi Sig was able to put the previous night's loss behind them and take advantage of the second chance. After jumping out to a first half lead, ATO & Co's offense went quiet, allowing Phi Sig & Friends to capitalize on second half opportunities. Posting 2 scores in the final frame put Phi Sig in front for good and temporarily masked the taste of failure from Wednesday night.
The Department of Campus Recreation would like to thank all employees and participants who made this a successful season. It's time to put away the long johns and practice the long range jumper, basketball starts up after the holiday break.
