Championship Thursday

Handball was such a huge success in its inaugural run in the Spring of 2009 that it gained full league status and was added for the Fall of 2009. Nearly a dozen teams in the men's and coed division set out this September with dreams of an intramural championship, but only two achieved their goals.

The first match of the night was a hotly contested battle in the men's division. Number one seeded Magic Johnsons had met up with number two seeded Mountain Men many times during the regular season, and so their rivalry was becoming hostile. Defense was the name of the game as both teams were held under twenty points and tensions flared, but savvy veteran officials Josiah Mellinger and Alex Shipper kept things under control and maintained order. In the end, it was Magic Johnsons who prevailed, narrowly edging Mountain Men by the score of 18-16.

On the co-rec side, things were a bit more finesse-orientated, but the matchup was not as close. Team Bookoo had been an offensive dynamo all season. Their strength came not from their male players, but through the tenacity of a trio of female powerhouses, Caitlin Bay, Megan Lott, and Adrienne Rahs. In their way was Who Dat Ninja?, a scrappy but ultimately underpowered force who upset number two seed Sigma What? to make the championship. But all the scrappiness in the world couldn't save them from Bookoo's relentless assault, and they would fall to the eventual champs by the score of 23-13.
