2008 Intramural Softball Championships
The first set of championship t-shirts were distributed today at Bobby Jones field, capping a successful start to
the 2008/09 intramural campaign. The 4pm Coed game saw a week one rematch between Lambda Chi Coed and the A-Bombs. Back in September, Lambda Chi managed to hand the A-Bombs a 4-1 loss, their only blemish on the season. Led by Captain Rachel Steel, the A Bombs set out on a brisk fall day to avenge that defeat and be crowned champions. The A-Bombs opened up a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the opening frame and didn't look back. Doug Graham led the onslaught thumping 2 gopher balls, one with the bases full. Posting at least one run in each of their halves, the A-Bombs capped off their season with a 13-4 win.
The men's playoffs provided very little suspense as the two top regular season squads made it unscathed through the single elimination postseason to square off in the championship game. With hardly anything separating the two, Goon Squad and Team Racked played to a 4-4 tie the previous week, setting the stage for season's culminating action. The Goon Squad returned three key players from last year's championship team (Team Japan) in Sean English, Andrew Vella and Tom McBride; adding experience to the talented and dangerous lineup. In the opposing dugout, Team Racked had plenty of questions surrounding skipper Ned Swain's ability to focus after a freak ball stealing incident involving a fox on the 314 yard par 4, 7th hole at Meadow Brook during last week's Campus Rec golf scramble. Questions aside, consistency proved to be the key to the game. Team Rackem was able to post a full 6 innings of quality softball with runs in each of the frames. Playing to a Billy Beane philosophy, The Goon Squad patiently waited for their big inning
and was well rewarded in the 3rd with an 8-spot. Despite that offensive output, The Goon Squad entered their half of the 6th trailing by 3. Rallying behind a capacity crowd at Bobby Jones Field, the defending champs showed their moxie by tying the game and forcing the bottom half of action. Despite the late push, Team Rackem's consistency proved to be the benchmark as a walk off double clinched the season.
The Department of Campus Recreation would like to thank all employees and participants who made this season a success, see you all next year.
