Reilly's Double-Double Leads Women's Basketball to 500th Win in Program History

Posted on Sun Nov 19 00:00:00 EST 2006

ARLINGTON, Va. - Senior captain Katie Reilly (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) scored a game-high 20 points and added a career-high 15 rebounds to help Gettysburg to a 70-52 win over Oswego State on Sunday afternoon at the Verizon Sports Arena. The victory sealed fourth place for the Bullets at the Marymount Tip-Off Tournament and was the 500th in the history of the Gettysburg women's basketball program.

Reilly made some history of her own as well. She blocked a pair of shots in the game to tie Cathy Bosma '90 and Megan McDonald '00 for the all-time Gettysburg career blocks lead. All three players have 103 swats. Reilly was also named to the all-tournament team.

Gettysburg (2-1) freshman forward Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) had the best game of her young career with 18 points, and junior guard Megan Hartman (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) added 12. The Lakers (1-2) were led by 15 points from Jessica Tremblay.
The Bullets made 21-of-24 free throws (87.5 percent) in the game, compared to a 15-for-23 showing (65.2 percent) by the Lakers. Gettysburg also had a 33.3-9.1 percent advantage in three-point shooting.

Just 22 seconds into the game, Sarah Lombard hit a pair of free throws to give Oswego State the early advantage. Fields converted a layup, and Reilly hit two free throws within the next minute, but Lombard tied it again at 4-4 with 17:05 to go in the first half. Neither team scored again until Tremblay made a layup more than two minutes later, and the Lakers held the lead for more than four minutes until a 3-pointer by Fields made it 15-14.

Oswego State extended its lead to five points twice, the last time coming with 7:02 to go before the intermission. After the lead went back and forth twice, Lyndsey Marquit hit a jumper with two minutes to go, pushing the Lakers' advantage to three points. A foul at the other end led to a pair of made free throws by Fields. Reilly made a jumper with 55 seconds showing on the clock in the first half to give Gettysburg the lead for good. The Bullets finished the opening session on an 8-1 run.

Gettysburg extended its lead to nine points at 38-29 by scoring the first five points of the second half as well. A free throw by Tremblay and two by Jessica Collins cut the lead to four points at the 15:45 mark, but that was as close as the Lakers would get the rest of the way. Hartman made two layups and a free throw in the next 20 seconds, and the Bullets began to pull away.

The Bullets extended their lead to 20 points on a pair of made foul shots by junior guard Sam Pyzik (Westminster, Md./Mercy) with 4:23 to play. A Hartman layup with 24 seconds to go pushed it to 20 again, but Oswego State's Samantha Driscoll hit a layup with 14 seconds to go to set the final score.

Gettysburg gets the Centennial Conference season underway on Tuesday night when the Bullets travel to Lancaster, Pa., to take on Franklin & Marshall. The opening tip is set for 6 p.m. at the Mayser Center.
