Redd Sets Career Highs With 14 Points, 19 Rebounds in 58-42 Loss to York (Pa.)

Posted on Tue Nov 21 00:00:00 EST 2006

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Senior captain Julius Redd (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) posted his first double-double, setting career highs with 14 points and 19 rebounds in the process, but it was not enough as York (Pa.) topped Gettysburg, 58-42, in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Bream Gym. Redd's previous highs were 12 points and 12 rebounds against Moravian last November.

Redd, who also had two blocks and a career-high five steals, was the game's leader in both rebounds and thefts. York (1-1) senior guard Brad Zerfing posted a game-high 15 points, and junior forward Chad McGowan led the Spartans with nine boards.

Gettysburg (1-2) got the scoring started on a jumper by Redd with just over a minute gone. York's Joe Yeck, a native of Gettysburg, tied it 36 seconds later, and sophomore forward Pat Kelley put the Spartans ahead at 4-2. They ran the advantage out to seven points midway through the half, but the Bullets chipped away at the lead until senior center Mike Beck (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater) and sophomore guard Chris Nevolo (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville) each connected on second-chance jumpers in the paint with just under four minutes to go before halftime. Those baskets made it 18-17 Gettysburg, and neither team would score for the next three minutes.

With under a minute to go, Zerfing exploded for six straight points to give York a 23-18 halftime advantage. He made his second layup in that stretch with under 10 seconds to go, then stole the inbounds pass and converted again just before time expired.

Zerfing continued his run out of the gates after halftime with a fast-break layup before Redd ended the run with a jumper on Gettysburg's next trip. The Spartans steadily built their lead until it reached 20 points a three-pointer by Nick Brady with 9:11 to play, and again two minutes later on a pair of free throws by Zerfing.

Gettysburg would draw it to within 15 twice in a little over a minute late in the game on a pair of 3-pointers by freshman guard CJ Jeffers (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep), who made his collegiate debut with six points in six minutes. Redd drew the deficit down to 14 points with a fast-break layup off a turnover with 18 seconds to play, but York sophomore guard Chris Cioffi hit a jumper with 12 seconds to go to finish the scoring.

The Bullets will be off for the Thanksgiving break and will resume play on Tuesday Nov. 28 when they travel to Lancaster, Pa., to take on Franklin & Marshall. Gettysburg's Centennial Conference opener will get underway at 7:30 p.m.
