The theme for the 2010 Civil War Institute Conference will focus on the "Election of 1860" considering the politics of the day, introducing the "characters" surrounding the election, and Secession with historians Michael Burlingame, Allen Guelzo, Matthew Pinsker, Michael Holt, Craig Symonds, and others. Former Senator George McGovern will speak on his new book, Abraham Lincoln (part of the American Presidents Series).Don't miss this week of scholarly pursuit and fun. Scholarships Available for CWI 2010
Scholarships are now being accepted for high school juniors and high school teachers of history for the 2010 Civil War Institute. Applicants need only submit the listed requirements along with the scholarship application. The standard registration form is not required. Dedication Day November 19, 2009

Deadline is February 15th
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is now accpeting applications for it's 2010 Summer Seminar Series for K-12 teachers in history, social studies, and English. Taught by renowned historians on college campuses in the US and the UK, these one-week seminars give educators the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of topics in American history-while gaining practical resources and strategies to take back to the their classrooms. The application deadline is February 15th. For a list of all thirty-nine seminars, information about full and partial fellowships, graduate credit, and to apply online, visit the GLI website.

Congratulations to Budge Weidman
Budge Weidman, a long time friend of the Civil War Institute, was recently featured in an article that ran in the Washington Post on February 1st. She is the Volunteer Project Manager at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington D.C., where she has headed the Civil War Conservation Corps since 1994, and has logged nearly 25,000 volunteer hours. The CWCC's main purpose is to help the National Archives preserve Civil War records and make them more easily accessible to the American public. To recognize her dedication, the Archives present the nationwide award "Weidman Outstanding Public Service Award" each year. Visit the Washington Post's website to see the full article. Congratulations to Doug Galuszka

Doug Galuszka, a long time attendee of the Civil War Institute, was recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army. He was promoted by his Battalion Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Cardenas, and his fiancée, Mandy, had the honor of pinning the new rank on to his uniform. Doug was also awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in recognition for his service to the Support Operations of the 421st MMB. Congratulations Doug!
