Lincoln Fellowship

The Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania was founded in 1938: "To observe as Americans each anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln; to fittingly commemorate the anniversary of the dedication of the Soldier's National Cemetery and the Gettysburg Address he delivered there; to preserve and make more readily accessible the landmarks associated with his life or ancestry within Pennsylvania; and to actively encourage the youth of our Commonwealth to embrace his ideals." To become a member visit Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania.
Each November 19th the Fellowship, in association with the National Park Service and the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College, commemorates the dedication of the National Cemetery and the Gettysburg Address in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Past speakers have included Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, William Rehnquist, Jack Kemp, Mario Cuomo, Colin Powell, Shelby Foote, Sandra Day O'Connor, John Hope Franklin, George Pataki, and Bruce Babbit. See the entire list of past speakers at the Lincoln Fellowship Luncheon. View the transcript of last year's speech, given by Craig Symonds.
In 1991, the Fellowship placed a sculpture of Abraham Lincoln entitled "Return Visit" on the square in Gettysburg. Mr. Lincoln is portrayed as pointing toward the room of the Wills' House where he finished writing the Gettysburg Address. Created by noted American sculptor J. Seward Johnson, Jr., this life size bronze sculpture may be the most realistic representation of Abraham Lincoln in existence. In order to create this masterpiece, Mr. Johnson was provided with a bronze life mask and hands taken of Mr. Lincoln, an exact copy of a suit of Lincoln's, and photographs of the boots once worn by the President.
Currently the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Fellowship is researching Lincoln sites in Pennsylvania, studying educational materials for use by public school children, and considering the publication of past November 19th addresses. View this year's newsletter for the Lincoln Fellowship.
