The Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College presents a week-long program each summer during the last week of June including lectures, battlefield tours, films, and other special activities. The CWI has sponsored this Institute since 1983, and 300 students of the war attend.

Scholarships to attend the annual Civil War Institute are available for high school juniors and high school history teachers.

A full scholarship covers a shared air-conditioned dorm room, board, and tuition. Transportation costs are NOT covered by scholarship funds. Only first-time attendees are eligible for scholarships.

Students who have completed at least their junior year of high school, one year of U.S. history, and have a genuine interest in the Civil War may apply for a scholarship by including the following with their application.

_____    An academic transcript;
_____    Two letters of recommendation (including one from a history teacher);
_____    A letter describing your interest in the Civil War and why you feel that the CWI would benefit you.
_____    An original work (essay or research paper) from your history class.

Teachers who wish to apply for a scholarship much teach full-time with at least two years experience, and have Civil War Studies as part of their teaching. PA ACT 48 & CEUs are in place and available for teachers in 2010. They should be prepared to share ideas/lessons associated with teaching Civil War studies and should submit the following with their application:

_____    One letter of recommendation from a teaching colleague, department chair, or principal;
_____    A second letter of recommendation from a recent student of that applicant;
_____    A letter describing what you hope to learn from, as well as contribute to, the CWI.

The deadline for application is April 15^th by 4:00 p.m. Scholarship recipients will be notified by mail as soon as a decision has been made (shortly before May 15th).
