2010 Fortenbaugh Lecturer Announced
Dr. Edward Ayers, President of the University of Richmond, will present the 2010 Fortenbaugh Lecture on November 19th at the Majestic Theatre in Gettysburg, PA. Dr. Ayers, who has served as President of Richmond University since July of 2007, has also received a presidential appointment to the National Council on the Humanities and has served as a Fulbright professor in the Netherlands. His lecture, "Loyalty and America's Civil War" will explore this remarkable and revealing moment in American history, identifying what was perhaps the key struggle of the Civil War era. Read more about his topic.
The Robert Fortenbaugh Memorial Lecture is presented each year on November 19, the anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. The goal of the lecture is to speak to the literate general public without abandoning solid scholarly moorings. Find out more information about the Fortenbaugh Lecture.

Essay Contest Winner Chosen
After careful consideration of many entries Christopher Yhun from Townsend Harris High School in Flushing, NY, was chosen the winner of the essay contest "What the Gettysburg Address Means to Me". Christopher will win $300.00 cash and a family vacation to Gettysburg where he will read his award winning essay to the Lincoln Fellowship at their yearly luncheon meeting. Townsend Harris High School will also receive $300.00 for their history department.
Second place went to Meera Nagarajan from Beavercreek, Ohio and third to Julia Borisova from Middle Village, NY. Read more about the Lincoln Fellowship of PA and how to enter the essay contest for 2011.
Pete Carmichael to Speak at Civil War Seminar
Registration is now being accepted for the seminar, "Lee: An Examination of One of America's Great Commanders," which will be presented Sept. 24-26 in Chambersburg. Peter Carmichael, Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College, will examine why Lee used aggressive tactics throughout the war.
