Walking with Lincoln Page 2

Soon after the armies departed, the Governor of Pennsylvania, Andrew Curtin, arrived.  Seeing the dead so imperfectly buried, some in shallow unmarked graves, he asked that a more fitting burial site be found for the fallen heroes.  David Wills, a local attorney, was placed in charge of this task.

Just who was Andrew Gregg Curtin?

Son of Roland and Jane Gregg Curtin, Andrew was born on April 22, 1817 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. Andrew Curtin completed course work at the Academy of the Reverend David Kirkpatrick before finishing his legal studies under Judge John Reed at Dickinson College.

Andrew Curtin did not become politically active until 1840. Curtin helped rally volunteers to defend the Union. Curtin then organized the first Pennsylvania Reserves, who were then sent to protect the Capitol.

Curtin completed his political career as a Democratic Congressman in 1887 in the US House of Representatives.
