Race, equality to be Lincoln Bicentennial panel topic Nov. 20 at Gettysburg College

GETTYSBURG, Pa - In honor of the 145th anniversary of the "Gettysburg Address," the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission will host a series of town hall meetings on race and equality with the first to take place Nov. 20 at Gettysburg College

The 7 p.m. panel discussion, "Lincoln's Legacy: Race, Freedom, and Equality of Opportunity," will take place in the College Union Building Ballroom. A panel of leaders and scholars will address this topic with participation of the gathered audience. This event is open to the public at no charge and tickets are not required.

Panelists include the Hon. Jesse Jackson Jr., a United States Representative from Illinois; Jack Kemp, a former Congressman and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development; Susan Eisenhower, president of the Eisenhower Institute at Gettysburg College; Allen Guelzo, professor of history and Director of Civil War Era Studies at Gettysburg College; and Norman Bristol Colon, executive director of the Pennsylvania Governor's Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs. Charles Russell Branham, senior historian at the DuSable Museum of African-American history, will moderate the event.

The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, a federally appointed committee focused on commemorating his 200th birthday, will host ten town hall meetings around the country. Other town hall meetings scheduled include Miami-Dade College (Miami) on Jan. 14, 2009; Fetzer Institute, Motorola (Boston) in March 2009; and Henry Ford Museum (Detroit) on April 20, 2009. Lincoln's 200th birthday anniversary is Feb. 12, 2009.

Gettysburg College is a highly selective four-year residential college of liberal arts and sciences with approximately 2,600 students. It is located on a 200-acre campus adjacent to Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania. The college was founded in 1832.
