Prizes and Scholarships

Awards and scholarships awarded or administered by Gettysburg College span the field of Civil War studies, from prestigious accolades for historians and novelists to scholarships that support students and teachers.

  • The $50,000 Lincoln Prize recognizes the finest scholarly work on the Civil War era.
  • Numerous scholarships make it possible for selected undergraduates from across the nation to take part in the Gettysburg Semester, the College's total-immersion program in Civil War studies, and high-school juniors and history teachers to attend the College's annual Civil War Institute.
  • The Michael Shaara Award for Excellence in Civil War Fiction honors the memory of the author of The Killer Angels and was established by his son, best-selling author Jeff Shaara.

A two-volume biography that was 30 years in the making, by one of the foremost living authorities on Abraham Lincoln, has won the 2010 Lincoln Prize.

Michael Burlingame will receive the $50,000 Lincoln Prize for his book, "Abraham Lincoln: A Life" (Johns Hopkins University Press), as well as a bronze replica of Augustus Saint-Gaudens life-size bust, "Lincoln the Man." Burlingame is the Chancellor Naomi B. Lynn Distinguished Chair of Lincoln Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The prize, sponsored by Gettysburg College and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, will be awarded April 27 at the Union League in New York.
