A long-standing tradition and an integral part of Commencement Weekend, this welcoming and inclusive service provides an opportunity for graduates and their families and friends to come together in thanksgiving for all that has brought them to this day, celebration of their accomplishments, and hope for all the future holds.  It is a moment of rest, joy and community in a very busy weekend. The service is optional, but everyone is warmly invited and we hope you will attend!

  • The service lasts approximately one (1) hour.
  • No tickets are required for this ceremony.
  • On-campus air conditioned alternate viewing locations with live video streaming will be available in the following locations: Masters Hall (Mara Auditorium) and Chamberlin Room (Admissions Office)
  • This event will be offered to virtual guests via the web as a live video stream beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 19. The livestream link will be available on the main Commencement webpage a week prior to the ceremony.
  • Seating will be reserved for guests with disabilities. Please see an usher for assistance. More information on Accessibility during Commencement Weekend.
  • Written copies of the script translated into Cantonese, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese may be picked up from an usher near the Band Tent.

Instructions:

The Class will meet in graduation regalia (cap, gown, tassel on the right side of cap, hood, and Stole of Gratitude) at the West Quad near Rice, Paul, and Stine Halls at 3:15 p.m. to form the academic procession to the location. In case of rain, the class will meet and line up in the basement of Christ Chapel. Check the website for weather-related site change information. Note: The basement is not accessible without going down stairs. If you are unable to get to the basement if lineup is moved inside, please see an usher. You will be able to wait upstairs and fall into line at the appropriate time.

Please form a double line for the procession, keeping an arm's length interval from the person ahead of you. The President and Vice President of the class, acting as student marshals, will assist in the lining up. Seating details will follow at lineup.

The Provost will remove his cap, which is the signal for students to remove caps as well. The service will be enhanced by your enthusiastic participation in the liturgy and singing. After the final hymn has been sung, caps will be replaced at the signal from the College Marshal. Please remain in your place until the faculty has recessed.
