Internships

The Department of History, Civil War Era Studies, and the Civil War Institute have arranged for representatives from several Civil War National Parks (Appomattox, Gettysburg, Harpers Ferry, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania) and representatives from Pamplin Park (located in Petersburg, VA) and Stratford Hall (located in Stratford, VA)  to come to campus, where they will interview Gettysburg students for summer 2012 internship positions.  You do not have to be a history major, let alone a specialist in the Civil War, to apply for one of these jobs.

The positions at the National Parks relate to the field of interpretation, which simply means that you will give historical programs and provide general guidance to the public so that they will have fulfilling exploration into the Civil War past.  See below for sample descriptions of some of the positions.  Please note that every National Park provides free housing and some form of limited compensation.

Pamplin Park's positions benefit the Park and meet all the criteria that the College imposes for intern credit.  In addition to that, interns could fulfill operational duties such as working duty stations their museums, assisting with costumed interpretive programs, leading guided tours assisting operations and maintenance in the remote chance that such activities meet your needs, etc.

Stratford Hall offers several positions in archival research and collection management.

All institutions are well respected in the fields of public history and historic preservation, and these opportunities, while hardly lucrative, can set you up nicely for your professional career.

INTERVIEW PROCEDURES:

  • Thirty-minute interviews will take place on October 25.
  • The next part is a little confusing so read carefully: All four representatives from the National Park Service will be in the room together to interview candidates, even if you are not interested in a particular park. After the interview, the parks will identify the candidates they want to hire and we hope that their offers will match with the candidate's preferred park. However, there is no guarantee that if selected for an internship that you will get your preferred place of employment.
  • The representatives from Stratford Hall and Pamplin will be holding interviews in separate locations. Please keep in mind that it is possible that you will have offers from the NPS, Pamplin Park, and Stratford Hall.

If you are interested in spending the summer as an intern at the National Park, Stratford Hall or Pamplin Park, you need to do the following before October 10:

1) Send a resume and cover letter to Diane Brennan at dbrennan@gettysburg.edu; be sure to list the most reliable way to contact you (via email, cell phone, etc.).

2) Please note in your email if you are applying for the National Park Service internships and the positions at the Pamplin park or if you are just applying to one (remember that all the NPS parks are wrapped up into a single interview session).

3) You should also identify three 30-minute slots in your email for scheduling your interview.  You can choose between the following times: 9:00-12:30 and 1:30-5:30.

Someone will get back to you with your assigned time and the location of the interview.  If necessary, some evening interview slots will be created.
