Reference & Instruction
Goal: To become familiar with the organization and operations of a Reference & Instruction Department of an academic library
Prerequisites:
- Prospective interns must have taken one of more reference courses.
- Due to space constraints and our desire to provide a meaningful mentorship for interns, we are unable to accommodate more than one intern each year.

Location: Reference & Instruction Department, main floor, Musselman Library
Dates available: Gettysburg College's Fall Semester. Prospective interns must be available during the third week of August for a training session of approximately fifteen hours in length. Weekday hours required, but some evening hours are possible on Mondays through Thursdays.
Internship activities:
- The intern will staff the Reference desk and assist students and other researchers in using the collections.
- The intern will participate in collection development of the Reference Collection.
- The Intern may work with various librarian liaisons to support various academic departments.
- The
intern may participate in our information fluency program by:
- preparing supportive course materials
- co-teaching a class as schedules permit
- collecting and analyzing statistics taken in support of the instruction program
- The intern may create and/or maintain reference materials on our website.
- The intern may assist with special events, including marketing and administrative support.
- Other duties as assigned.
